On Sat 8th Feb, a group of #avgeeks from BFC had the pleasure of a guided tour of the HEMS Facility at BXG.
MICA Paramedic Steve, Chief Pilot Sam & Air crewman Chris gave us a warm welcome & dedicated 2 hours of their time to show us around their facilities as well as their Air Ambulance VH-YXJ, a 2015 Augusta AW139 aircraft powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney engines.
This 6+ tonne beast of an aircraft is a virtual flying hospital with everything onboard for all major trauma-related medical care, as well as search & rescue capabilities.
It burns around 400kgs of fuel an hour & has approximately 2.5hrs of endurance, meaning they can go anywhere within Victoria when needed.
We all had a fantastic time, took many photos, and answered many questions. They also shared many stories of different places, incidents and accidents they go to regularly.
It shed a whole new light on what one of our neighbouring aviators gets up to in what is without a doubt a vital part of Ambulance Victoria's operations. We're lucky to have such a facility here in Central Victoria!
